I heard about it via Dr. Reese on Twitter. There are lots of ways to disagree respectfully with Dr. Reese. You don't have to tell her she's wrong, or minimize her extensive expertise, or go so far as to publish an article about how much you disagree with her and disrespect her expertise in the process. Just form the thought in your head "I have a different opinion of that book." That's all you need to do, then move along. Nowhere in the children's lit world are there laws that we must all agree with Dr. Reese and RWW 100% of the time. We are grown adults with freedom of thought, how wonderful! I follow Dr. Reese's and the RWW blog's work among many other children's literature resources, use them to inform my own practice, teaching and writing and yet, I do sometimes have thoughts along the lines of "I have a different opinion of that book" but what I don't do is take to pen to paper to denigrate the thoughtful work of other people who clearly care about children's books and the children who read them as much as I do. We are allowed to arrive at our opinions of books on our own but we should stay open to hearing from others. By the way, I was also on a Caldecott Committee so I do understand how that award works and I still think Dr. Reese can say whatever she wants about the awarded books or the books that didn't win.
